Why becoming a member is vital

Barry Sheerman, MP for Huddersfield and Chairman of WCRAQ, comments: ‘Since 2020, WCRAQ has gone from strength to strength, with five solid working parties and many achievements that we can all be proud of. We have brought industry leaders, academics, and politicians together to help achieve our collective aim to enshrine the inalienable right to breathe clean air, not only into law but also in practice.

‘This year, I have presented and re-presented my Private Members’ Bill, which would tighten the regulations for the MOT test by implementing a more rigorous emissions test on DPFs. A faulty DPF can produce the same amount of pollution as a three-lane, 360-mile-long traffic jam, which is the distance from my constituency in Huddersfield to Land’s End. When I heard these facts and figures in a WCRAQ Air Monitoring meeting, I was shocked and knew we had to do something about it. My Bill has been on the record for two Parliamentary sessions, and we continue to pick up traction and support from across the House of Commons.

‘As part of the work WCRAQ has been doing within Westminster, I and other parliamentarians have been wearing personal air quality monitors around the Parliamentary estate. What we have found so far has been eye-opening. The mother of all Parliaments is shrouded in poisonous air. In my office, in the modern part of the estate, the readings for PM2.5 and NOX have never been within WHO limits. We will use this data as a tool to raise awareness with my fellow MPs of poor air quality across the estate and pressure the House authorities to act.

‘In our event for The International Day of Clean Air, WCRAQ, the NYPD Fleet, NYC DCAS, and the City of London Corporation came together to foster international cooperation to improve air quality worldwide. The programme highlighted how global cities transition to clean fleets while implementing measures to reduce emissions and ultra-fine particulates to protect the health of people who live and visit their cities. We shared best practices which will help us shape air quality policy here in the UK.

‘It will be a delight to welcome you to the Westminster Commission for Road Air Quality’s first annual Parliamentary Reception. We will celebrate the work of the Commission and our progress towards our air quality objectives, as we wish to thank our members for their support over the last year with drinks and canapes in the Houses of Parliament. So, become a member of WCRAQ today and join us,’ commented Barry.

WCRAQ looks forward to seeing you at the splendid setting of the Houses of Parliament on the banks of the Thames while raising a glass to celebrate how much we have achieved in our fight for the right to breathe clean air.
