Response from our Chairman to DEFRA air quality measures: ‘More urgent action on air quality is still required’

Our Chairman and MP for Huddersfield, Barry Sheerman, has responded to the new measures announced by the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs to improve air quality introduced under the Environment Act.

‘The Air Pollution (Local Authority Audits) Bill 2021-22, which I tabled in the previous session of Parliament, would have placed strict statutory requirements on local authorities to conduct annual audits of the air quality in their area. The changes in the guidance announced this week are a step in the right direction, but we still need urgent action so that every person can enjoy their inalienable right to breathe clean air,’ said Barry.
