Happy World EV Day: What is EV Day and why our planet urgently needs clean mobility

  • September 9 marks World EV Day: a celebration of e-mobility that raises awareness of the benefits of electric. This year it has a special significance as 2020 has seen a firm push towards clean battery-powered mobility.

Across the globe, EV Day is being celebrated with the focus on clean vehicles more relevant than ever. It is becoming increasingly clear that automobile emissions and dependence on fossil fuels are very present threats to the sustainability of our planet.

The push for clean mobility is being firmly established as an increasing number of car makers are currently offering or planning to develop electric vehicles, from the Vauxhall Corsa-e to the bestselling Telsa. Drivers across the world are beginning to see the benefits of EVs, in terms of running cost, maintenance charges, and the knowledge of saving the planet.

World EV Day 2020 is placing a firm focus on the alternate options to fossil fuel vehicles. This has been significant year for pushing forwards cleaner mobility. Various countries have set targets for emission free transportation, introducing incentives to boost sales of electric vehicles, building up charging infrastructure, and numerous car makers have added electric vehicles to their line-up of models.

Europe is leading the way by becoming a global hotspot for the EV market, with multiple incentives introduced by governments to drive growth over the next five years. France and Germany’s EV incentives are particularly desirable, with EVs usually costing less than the average cost of a phone contract.

Pollution is an issue that is not going away any time soon. Electric vehicles are one measure to improve the air quality of towns and cities. Compared to the lifetime of an internal combustion engine, EVs produce considerably lower greenhouse emissions. According to the energy company EDF, a single electric car can save 1.5 million grams of COannually. Not to mention, electric cars also reduce noise pollution.

Electric cars may not be totally perfect yet, with lithium-ion batteries causing their own environmental and social issues. Nevertheless, EVs are a push in the right direction. They have challenged our use of fossil fuels and internal combustion engines and making us consider the issue of road air quality. With the rapid advancement of technology, it may soon to possible to run your electric car on the world’s smelliest fruit.
