Birmingham City Council is pushing ahead with plans to start its charging Clean Air Zone from 1 June 2021, starting to install ANPR cameras to monitor it.
The scheme received approval in late 2020 to go live in the summer of 2021, after being delayed from its original planned implementation date of January 2020. This will follow the Bath CAZ start date on 15 March 2021. These will be the first charging CAZs outside London’s Ultra Low Emission Zone scheme.
Bath’s ‘Class C’ CAZ will not charge private cars, however Birmingham is implementing a ‘Class D’ scheme which will apply to all vehicle types.
The CAZ will cover all major routes within the Middleway Ring Road.
Currently extensive system testing and trials are underway, with 67 ANPR cameras supplied by Siemens Mobility installed across the city. The camera will identify and register each vehicle entering the zone at all times: an estimated 200,000 vehicles every day.
‘Birmingham remains committed to launching the Government mandated Clean Air Zone on 1 June 2021,’ Councillor Waseem Zaffar of Birmingham City Council commented. ‘Poor air quality remains a public health risk and a Clean Air Zone provides the city with an effective tool for tackling this issue in the shorted possible time.’
