Recycling air pollution residue into construction material

Innovative Ash Solutions has been accredited by the Scottish Environmental Protection Agency regulator to use air pollution control residues as low-strength cementitious products.

Air pollution control residue (APCr) is a hazardous waste produced by cleaning the flu gases in energy-from-waste (EfW) and wood facilities.

Innovative Ash Solutions, a new Scottish start-up joint venture between Levenseat and Organic Innovative Solutions, will reduce 6,000 tonnes of material a year from being sent to landfill or transport out of Scotland for disposal.

An added bonus is manufacturing locally produced, sustainable feedstock for Scottish civil engineering, helping to improve the resilience of the sector, and reducing reliance on imports while cutting carbon emissions.

The new treatment technology is new to the market and will help Scotland reach its net zero by 2045 target.

Angus Hamilton, Managing Director at Levenseat, commented: ‘We have found a way to treat and recycle APCr as a replacement for low-strength cementitious products. As well as being an innovative and environmentally friendly alternative to landfilling, the product created from the treatment of APCr will replace ash derivative from coal-fired power stations.’

‘The Company is now focused on commissioning its first production facility and marketing its services to the growing Energy from Waste and Wood Biomass sectors in Scotland and the north of England. Once commissioned the project will create a number of green jobs including opportunities for Apprenticeships and Graduate training positions.’
